The Designer Demetrios

Who is Demetrios? While you may recognize his name, his designs have been seen in over hundreds of bridal magazines, who is the man behind the empire? Demetrios James Elias was born in Pireas, Greece and went to the United States as a young boy. The industrious and creative man grew up to become one of the world's most preeminent wedding gown designers.

His exposure to the wedding industry has been lifelong. Demetrios' parents owned a bridal retail shop in Warren, Ohio where the aspiring designer became familiar with design, fabric, and his legendary attention to detail.

Working in the family business, he became a favorite of brides throughout the state with his creative styles. The designer is probably one of the most prolific bridal manufacturers today. At the end of last year, Demetrios had a whopping 250 active bridal gown styles. Each season there are another 50 brand new Demetrios designs added to the collection.

From fine lace to exquisite fabric, each gown is designed to make the bride feel and look her best on her wedding day. This includes an array of dresses, which run the range of full skirt to sheath. Bodices also come in a wide variety, as well as sleeve lengths to fit a variety of options. From demure and conservative to bold and fashion forward, Demetrios designs reach a wide segment of the bridal market.

In 1980, Demetrios began his empire by purchasing Ilissa an existing bridal manufacturer in New York.

The designer set off an ambitious expansion plan in the 80's, signing up dealers worldwide. Demetrios' elegant and luxurious gowns quickly became recognized throughout the bridal market. Few brides have escaped his full-page advertisements in major bridal publications.
By 1991, Demetrios had so many ads in bridal magazines he launched his own publications. For the Bride by Demetrios was born as the first, and to date the only designer owned bridal magazine. Today, Demetrios publishes his magazine quarterly, boasting a paid annual circulation in excess of one million copies.

There are more than 2000 bridal shops worldwide that carry Demetrios gowns. They represent among the well known Demetrios' labels such as Demetrios Couture, Ilissa, Young Sophisticates, The Princess Collection and Sposabella New York. Each line has its own look and voices the elements of design that Demetrios is known for.
